          Sodium nitrate is a type of inorganic salt, and chemically formulated as NaNO3, which is a white powder, also known as Chile saltpeter or (less commonly) Peruvian saltpetre. The world's largest sodium nitrate mine is in Chile's Atacama desert. NaOH(aq) + HNO3(aq) → NaNO3(aq) + H2O(l) sodium nitrate is heated to 380℃ and decomposed to produce sodium nitrite and oxygen. Sodium nitrate has oxidation property and can react with lead to produce sodium nitrite and lead oxide. It is also used to oxidize hydrogen iodic acid into iodine and form nitric oxide at room temperature. When hydrogen ions are introduced into sodium nitrate solution, it will show the characteristics of nitric acid. Sodium nitrate is one of the components of curing salt.



          Sodium nitrate is colorless transparent or white microstrip yellow diamond crystal with slightly bitter taste and moisture property. When it is dissolved in water, the temperature of the solution will decrease and the solution is shown to be neutral. The sodium nitrate is oxidant and poisonous, if rub or impact with organic matter can cause combustion or explosion.


          In the enamel industry, it is used as flux, oxidant and raw material for making enamel powder. In the glass industry, it is used as decoloring agent, defoaming agent, clarifying agent and oxidizing flux for making various glasses. In the inorganic industry, it is used as decolorizing agent for molten caustic soda and manufacturing other nitrates. In the food industry, it is used as a color agent for meat processing, which can prevent meat from going bad and can play a flavoring role. In the fertilizer industry, it is used as a quick-acting fertilizer for acid soils, especially for root crops such as beets and radishes.


          In the dye industry, it is used as raw material for the production of picric acid and dyes. In the metallurgical industry ,it is used as thermal treatment agent for steel making and aluminum alloy. In the mechanical industry, it is used as metal cleaning agent and black metal bluing agent. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used as a medium for making penicillin .In the cigarette industry, it is used as an accelerant in tobacco. In analytical chemistry, it is used as a chemical reagent .In addition, it is also used to produce explosives.
